It’s time for the 2014 Detroit auto show, when the Motor City opens its doors to the world and puts on an event competitive with the best anywhere. It’s like Christmastime for enthusiasts. This year’s show promises to be a good one, with everything from a new F 150 pickup to a new Lexus sports car to the mighty C7 Corvette Z06. Show organizers say they are expecting more than 50 concept and production car world debuts in what will be the show’s 25th year as an international event. The Detroit concept is thus far billed as a styling study, but Audi chairman Rupert Stadler said the Q1 will go into production in 2016.

The crossover concept has a traditional shooting brake like body with a long wheelbase and short overhangs. Also expect to see two long doors and an angled tailgate. Among the more prominent design elements is a new Audi single frame grille wearing a quattro badge. The concept is 165 inches long, almost 8 inches shorter than the Q3.

E tron identification indicates the concept will showcase a plug in gas electric hybrid system, most likely similar to that in the A3 e tron the company’s first plug in hybrid production model.

Z4 Pure Fusion, a special edition convertible with new interior options including napa leather trim and specially designed sport seats in ivory white. The lower dash will also have ivory white leather, in addition to the armrests, door panels, and passenger pull handles. The dash will also feature a horizontal trimline made of saddle brown napa leather with bright contrast stitching.

BMW will also show the 2 series coupe, M3 sedan, M4 coupe and i series. The 2 series will replace the 1 series coupes, conforming to the company’s naming scheme in which sedans have odd numbers and coupes have even numbers. BMW says it will be offered both as a 228i (240 hp) and a 235i (322 hp), meaning they’ll get the same turbocharged I4s and I6s as the outgoing 1 series. An M235i will sit atop the 2 series range, with go fast bits from the other M cars.

The 2 series will launch in the first quarter of 2014, with a $33,025 starting price. Detroit will also be the first time most of us get to see the new M3 sedan and M4 coupe up close and personal. The Ms will debut side by side, sporting 425 hp, 406 lb ft inline six engines, dual clutch or manual transmissions and 0 60 sprint times in less than 4 seconds.F 150s have been America’s best selling truck for 37 years, and its best selling vehicle, period, for 32. Some 750,000 will be sold this year, so the new truck has enormous shoes to fill.

We hear the new F 150 will look a lot like the Atlas concept from last year’s show and that it will be aluminum. The company wants to demonstrate aluminum’s toughness and light weight to pickup buyers. In fact, Autoweek sister publication Automotive News reports Ford asked Alcoa Inc., makers of aluminum blast shields for battlefield vehicles, to lend it some military grade metal for the automaker’s display.

At last year’s show,
agoura water polo Your guide to the 2014 Detroit auto show
Ford COO Mark Fields said the company would take some 750 pounds out of its next generation trucks to meet tightening fuel economy regulations. The next generation F 150 will probably offer a new 2.7 liter EcoBoost engine, part of a family of powertrains code named Nano. Ford hopes the new full size truck will approach 30 mpg on the highway.

new, third generation Fit small car. Honda says the 2015 Fit will build on the car’s innovative packaging, flexible cargo capability and fun to drive character. Honda also says the interior will be bigger and more refined and have connected car technologies. According to Honda, the new Fit will be more fuel efficient, though powertrain specifics haven’t been given. The platform is new, and Honda says it thinks the car will earn class leading safety ratings. Automotive News says the new Fit will have Honda’s Earth Dreams 1.5 liter inline four producing 127 hp and 111 lb ft of torque, as well as a CVT.

Over on the TLX sedan prototype. What’s the TLX? It will be the new name for Acura’s midsize sedan, replacing the outgoing TL and TSX. Acura says the TLX will have emotional styling with tidier, sports sedan proportions and two new powertrains. The production version will launch in the second half of the year, when TSX sales end.

Acura didn’t give powertrain specifics, only saying two new direct injected engines and a new transmission will be offered, and that the car will be available with front and all wheel drive.

new C300 and C400 sedans. The car is codenamed W205, and it looks like a baby S class. It will go on sale here in September, and it’s set to take on the BMW 3 series and Audi A4. Benz says the car has a new high strength steel platform and mostly aluminum body. The automaker also says the car weighs 220 pounds less than the car it will replace and should get 20 percent better fuel economy without any performance loss.

We haven’t seen the new car in person yet, but it sure looks pretty in pictures, with clear S class hints in the bold front end. The new car is 3.7 inches longer with a 3.1 inch longer wheelbase and is 1.6 inches wider than the outgoing C. Base C300 4Matic models will have a 2.0 liter turbo four developing 235 hp and 273 lb ft. The C400 4Matic will have a 3.5 liter turbo V6 with 329 hp and 354 lb ft. Both engines are mated to a standard seven speed automatic gearbox. green light). Also expect a new C class coupe and convertible the convertible tentatively scheduled for 2016. The new C class will also spawn the new GLK, planned for 2015. Look for the mighty C63 by the end of the year.

The new

Mini says the concept is lighter, but has a longer wheelbase and wider track than the outgoing model. Look for new air intakes in place of fog lights, and a general reworking of the bumper all around. LED headlights and a black grille surround complete the package.

The Highways gray paint is made with a manufacturing process that gives it a brushed aluminum look. Red stripes run across the hood and rear, and there are red accents on the wheels, calipers, turn signal surrounds and contour lines.

The last JCW Mini came with a turbocharged 1.6 liter making 211 hp and 191 lb ft of torque, plenty for the 2,612 pound hatch. With upgrades all around, we’d be surprised if the engine compartment didn’t get a boost as well.

When Stephanie Polka was about 7 years old she created an imaginary dance studio in her basement. She choreographed about 30 different numbers for her imaginary recitals and different costumes for each routine.

So, when she told her parents she was going to open a dance studio instead of going to college after graduating from Lewiston Porter High School in ’08, they were not surprised.

Polka, who’s first gig out of high school was to choreograph the school’s high school musical, “Bye Bye Birdie,” will return again this year to plan the dance steps for “Sound of Music.” She also started an award winning dance team at Lewiston Porter while she was a student there and currently coaches that team as well.

Her new studio,

I knew I would end up owning my own business and was inspired by my dad, who never went to college and owns his own successful business, Glenn F. Polka Remodeling and Home Improvement. They were all inspired by each other they were the most phenomenal dancers I’ve ever seen. I find it amazing that Gene Kelly’s first teaching job was at his old high school, choreographing his high school’s musical, which I also did.

The man asked for a dollar, and when she gave him one, he asked to shake her hand. But he then grabbed hold of her, pull her in close and used his other hand to sexually assault her, investigators said.”She was trying to engage with another community member, being a good neighbor,” El Dorado County Sgt. Tasha Thompson said. “Unfortunately, this person took advantage of her.”As the woman screamed for help and began fighting back, the man didn’t let go, deputies said.He eventually released her, apologized and ran south from the trail. As he ran from the victim, he lost one of his shoes, which was collected by sheriff’s deputies.”It helps us where there’s possibly DNA evidence on it, someone may recognize that shoe along with the description we put out as someone they know,” Thompson said.Dozens of people were biking, running or walking on the trail Wednesday afternoon and had just learned about the crime.”That’s really concerning because I am on this trail, and I am on it a lot by myself,” Joanie Lowe said.Kale Elledge runs the trail regularly and said he likely passed the victim and the suspect on the same day of the crime moments before it happened.”There was plenty of people on the trail,” Elledge said. “I mean you don’t really expect that someone would have the gall to assault somebody in the middle of the day on the trail.”Michelle Jackson said she’s walked the trail for years, but now she will no longer be doing it solo.”After hearing about the incident, we’re not going to do that anymore,” Jackson said. The suspect is described as being between 14 and 20 years old, standing 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds. He has brown eyes and dark, messy hair that stood straight up by 2 to 3 inches. He was wearing a sky blue short sleeved polo shirt, blue jeans and red Nike shoes, deputies said.Anyone with information about the man or incident is asked to call the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office at 530 542 4709.

Timothy Brooks was mourning the loss of a close friend and recovering from a shoulder injury that ended his lacrosse career. He dropped out of the University of Richmond after only a couple of months.

At the time, Clinton Brooks said, he recognized signs of depression in his son the same ones from which he had suffered at that age.

Although his son was going out drinking, smoking marijuana, and taking the hallucinogenic drug MDMA, Clinton Brooks said, he never suspected addiction until a detective, after grilling Timothy Brooks for hours, pulled the father aside and put it in terms he could not deny.

Four months earlier, Timothy Brooks had made contact with a fellow Haverford School alumnus, 25 year old Neil K. Scott, who supplied and advised Brooks on his burgeoning marijuana business.

In one text message, Brooks called it the “Main Line Takeover Project,” a name that would stick after the District Attorney’s Office busted the drug ring.

Searching the Brooks home in March, detectives found a pound of marijuana and $800. Prosecutors said Scott and Brooks had been major suppliers of marijuana to high school students at their alma mater, as well as Radnor, Lower Merion, Harriton, and Conestoga High Schools, and Lafayette and Haverford Colleges.

“He was in it to make money,” Assistant District Attorney Tonya W. Lupinacci said. “This was his brainchild.”

But the judge said, “I have to sentence the version of you that was actively selling weed to high school kids along the Main Line. We cannot send the message that it is OK.”

Following state guidelines, O’Neill sentenced Brooks to nine to 23 months, and five years’ probation. But unlike Scott, who received five to 15 years in state prison, Brooks will serve his time in the county jail and may be eligible for work release after three months.

A walk through Central City Park pushes a man with his friends to hand the shirt off his back and the shoes on his feet to a person he’s never met before.

Gabrielle Dawkins shares what prompted this act of kindness.

19 year old Deundrae Gay, a former student of Northeast High School, his brother, Sheddrick Wallace, and friend, Jaquavious Griffin, decided to share love.

of thinking about ourselves, we need to think about somebody else. One day when we were riding out, we seen some homeless men,” said Gay. were just thinkinh maybe they deserve it more than we do. a video posted last week, these men can be seen handing out sweaters.

“I bought a little sweater, and he had bought him a little sweater, too, and that way, it was in the bag. My friend that was with us, he had put a hood in one of the bags. It really was just something to keep them warm, because I know it’s pretty cold out here. It’s about to be winter time,” said Gay.

The reason behind the “Pink” labeled sweater is that a family member close to his heart recently passed away due to breast cancer.

auntie actually died a couple years ago, and her favorite clothing line was PINK, so when she died, it kind of hurt me. So, ever since then I’ve been wearing Pink, said Gay.

A selfless act of giving led Gay to take the sweater off of his own back and shoes off of his feet, handing it over to a complete stranger.

never had everything, so I was thinking like, ‘I can always buy another sweater, but them they probably don’t have it like I do,’ so I just gave it to them, said Gay. really wasn’t thinking about it too much when I did it. in all, the end result startled him. He didn’t think a post would bring this much attention.

was pretty cool. It made me happy. I felt good about it, and it made him happy they felt good about it, because, like I said, Macon got a lot of hate in it.

AUBURN Most high school students fill their after school hours with an extracurricular activity.

So does 15 year old Aaron Lesch, but it’s not the kind of extracurricularone would normally think of.

Lesch, a sophomore at Manlius Pebble Hill School in Syracuse, now runs his own streetwear shop called Kick it Back, where he sells new and used name brand shoes and vintage clothing. The shop, located in newly renovated space at 147 State St. in Auburn, is owned by Lesch’s parents, but they let him run his store out of the building’s first floor.

Lesch said he has wanted to run his own store since the summer before he went into eighth grade, when he bought his first pair of sneakers as a way to individualize his school uniform of button up shirts and khaki pants.

“I came to the conclusion that I really needed something to make myself an individual,” Lesch said. “I’ve always liked to be an individual.”

By the beginning of that school year, Lesch had turned one pair of shoes into almost 30 different pairs.

Lesch said the biggest challenge he has faced during the month his shop has been open is coming up with a way to describe it to people.

“A lot of people ask what my business is and when I say it’s a sneaker shop, they think of Foot Locker or something like that,” Lesch said. “This business is so unique, especially for this location, that it’s almost hard to have a specific name, but I like to call it a streetwear shop.”

Streetwear is typically described as casual,
black and yellow polo Young entrepreneur's Auburn streetwear shop brings nostalgia
comfortable attire with vintage, skater or hip hop elements.

Along one wall in Lesch’s Auburn store are racks of sneakers from brandssuch as Air Jordan, Yeezy and Nike. He has a rack of shoes for $100 and under, but other shoes come with a hefty price tag. Lesch has a pair of usedAdidas Yeezy Boost 350 sneakers on sale for $700.

“Anyone that appreciates vintage culture or streetwear culture or any sports history, this spot pretty much encompasses all of that,” Lesch said of his shop.

Lesch’s merchandise is available to purchase online. He ships around the county and internationally as well.

Most of the store’s selection is catered to men, but Lesch said he is working on getting more products for women as well. He purchases his merchandise from online shops like eBay, from going to sneaker events and from people bringing him stuff to sell.

“Within this type of culture, new and used don’t really matter,” Lesch said, adding that customers like getting a good deal on unique items.

Another aspect that makes Lesch’s store unique is its name. Lesch said he wanted a name that could be shortened into an acronym stylized as KiB and could also have multiple different meanings.

Kick it Back refers to the store’s laid back and comfortable style. It is also a reference to the shop’s vintage items, which have made some people nostalgic about the past.

“A lot of people come in and say, ‘Wow, I remember all of this stuff from when I was growing up or from my childhood,'” Lesch said. “For a lot of people, that’s a special feeling.”

Twenty seven million Americans of working age (or 14% of the population) are starting or running new businesses. How many of these entrepreneurs are likely to be successful? Very few.

One problem is the presumption that you need a single strategy to be successful. Not true. Companies that become successful usually have two strategies.

It’s like building an airplane designed to fly at 500 miles per hour at an altitude of 30,000 feet. To do that takes a certain amount of engine power and a streamlined design with minimum drag. But that’s not enough.

You have to get the airplane off the ground in the first place. That takes wheels, wing flaps and a lot more engine power than you would need at 30,000 feet. You need two strategies: to take off, and to fly.

FedEx is a global package delivery and logistics company serving 220 countries and territories. But it didn’t start that way. Federal Express, its original name, started as a domestic air cargo carrier, competing with market leader Emery Air Freight.

Federal Express’s initial strategy was to be “cheaper, cheaper, cheaper.” In other words, to be less expensive than Emery on all three services: overnight, two day and three day deliveries.

But it didn’t work. Federal Express lost $27 million, when $27 million was a lot of money. So what next?

Many companies would have tried to expand the business in order to make money. Perhaps by adding international service. But not Federal Express.

It did what every money losing business ought to do. It narrowed its focus in order to stand for something. In the case of Federal Express, overnight service.

Remember the slogna? “When it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight.”

If you can’t win in the short term, your long term future is in serious doubt.

Henry Ford’s first automobile was the Model A, which sold 1,708 cars in the year 1903. The next year, Ford introduced three new models (B, C and F,) but managed to sell only 1,695 cars. That made a deep impression on him.

So when he finally introduced the Model T in 1908, he announced to his staff: In the future we were going to build only one model, that the model was going to be Model T.

The results were astounding. In the next 18 years, Ford’s market share averaged 43%. (Today with 15 models,

Ford’s market share is 14%.)

With eight models, Jeep is the world leader in SUVs, but it didn’t start that way.

Jeep went into production in 1941 specifically for the military, making it the oldest four wheel drive mass production vehicle in the world.

Toyota arrived in the American market in 1958 and became the largest selling Japanese vehicle brand. But it wasn’t until 31 years later that Toyota introduced Lexus which became the largest selling luxury Japanese vehicle brand.

Suppose Toyota tried to introduce the two brands together, Toyota and Lexus. Would that have worked? I think not. It was the success of Toyota that made the success of Lexus possible.

It started with one product, a moisturizer called “Oil of Olay Beauty Fluid.” If Oil of Olay never became famous, the Olay brand would never have become famous either.

Chanel is a $2.9 billion global brand selling clothing, watches, jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear and Chanel No.5, one of the world’s most famous perfumes. But it didn’t start that way.

It started with the Chanel suit, designed by Coco Chanel.

Coach is a $4.5 billion global brand selling leather goods, dresses, shoes, jewelry, watches and sunglasses. But it didn’t start that way.

Procter Gamble is a $65.3 billion global company, but it started in 1837 as a maker of soap and candles. And the seeds of its modern success can be traced to what the company did in 1879, 42 years later. That was the year Procter Gamble introduced Ivory soap.

You can’t do everything at once.

There are a number of companies trying to create “lifestyle” brands by doing everything at once, including Shinola in Detroit.

Shinola makes watches, leather goods and bicycles today and has opened stores in Detroit, London, Miami and Los Angeles. It plans to make headphones, power strips, electronics,

eyewear and homeware in the near future.

They say it is unfair that the USSF pays them about a quarter less than what they pay the men when they represent the United States in international competition.

On Tuesday in the aftermath of the University of Connecticut smashing Syracuse to win the NCAA Women Tournament, one angle was that Huskies coach Geno Auriemma, by winning his 11th title, had passed UCLA legendary men coach John Wooden for the most championships in Division I basketball.

Companies paid more than $600 million for the 451 thirty second television commercials at the 2014 World Cup. The 2015 Women Cup drew about $40 million.

The biggest thing is that FIFA, soccer world governing body, gives the women game little respect.

The USA women team got $2 million for winning the 2015 Women World Cup while the men got $9 million for getting knocked out in the round of 16 in the 2014 World Cup because FIFA awarded the bonuses.

The EEOC can tell an international business how to give out its prize money.

That disparity in pay is a function of the business market and not sex discrimination.

Prince seems to be on people minds during this Super Bowl week. Whether it his former associates playing Prince tributes at Super Bowl Live on Nicollet Mall, reminiscing about his unforgettable 2007 Super Bowl halftime performance or Justin Timberlake having a listening party of his new album at Prince Paisley Park studio.

Maybe the best way for visitors and locals alike to get a taste of the Purple One this week without spending the bucks for Paisley Park tours is to check out the Prince pop up display in the first floor of the old Macy on Nicollet Mall. It free.

A tease for what on display at Paisley Park, this pop up features lots of Prince outfits, accessories and shoes. Lots of shoes. Striped ones, purple ones, ones decorated with clouds for the Beret video. Some jewelry, canes and a pair of 3rdEye sunglasses are on exhibit. Hats, too.

Some of Prince outfits are in singular cases whereas there is one large road case crammed with multiple outfits. And the shoes, they everywhere.

What differentiates this pop up museum from Paisley Park and a similar temporary pop up at Mall of America in 2016 is that photos are allowed. Bring your cameras and cellphones. And some money because there are plenty of Prince souvenirs from photo books to stocking caps for sale.
