polo frames Young teacher opens dance studio and store in Youngstown
When Stephanie Polka was about 7 years old she created an imaginary dance studio in her basement. She choreographed about 30 different numbers for her imaginary recitals and different costumes for each routine.
So, when she told her parents she was going to open a dance studio instead of going to college after graduating from Lewiston Porter High School in ’08, they were not surprised.
Polka, who’s first gig out of high school was to choreograph the school’s high school musical, “Bye Bye Birdie,” will return again this year to plan the dance steps for “Sound of Music.” She also started an award winning dance team at Lewiston Porter while she was a student there and currently coaches that team as well.
Her new studio,
called Curtain Call Dance Academy, is located at 134 Lockport St. in Youngstown. I have been training in this subject all my life. I knew I would end up owning my own business and was inspired by my dad, who never went to college and owns his own successful business, Glenn F. Polka Remodeling and Home Improvement. They were all inspired by each other they were the most phenomenal dancers I’ve ever seen. I find it amazing that Gene Kelly’s first teaching job was at his old high school, choreographing his high school’s musical, which I also did.
