While reflecting on his own journey, Coles touched on the waterfall legend of koi fish.
Many koi were swimming against the current upstream until they reached a waterfall and many koi turned back, the remaining leapt as they tried to jump it. After 100 years of jumping one koi made it to the top of the waterfall. For his perseverance and determination, the gods rewarded him by turning him into a gold dragon.
gold dragon is my next piece, he added.
After finishing a piece like this one, he said there wasn an emotion he could simply put on it.
a huge relief, this piece really hit home for me. It has every emotion for me to think of in it. This one here gave me the shakes a bit when it was all done, said Coles.
Japanese and Asian cultures have inspired a lot of his work.
love everything to do with wood, nature is a huge thing for me. I have a big thing for Asian and Japanese inspired stuff, said Coles. like to do more pieces like this one, I have more ideas on the go.
Enjoying the time away in his garage is one aspect Coles indicated he liked about the work.
a getaway for me, stress relief. It something I can do to turn my mind off from everything else, he said.
One of the more stimulating parts of his job was just gathering all the materials used for what he makes.
the fun part about it is salvaging all the different things to repurpose. All this barn wood and old rusty metal stuff. It not my style, but when I can tweak it and play with it and make something out of it, it fun,
Coles gathered an interest in woodworking when he was a child, because of his love for building things.
always just wanted to make something, he explained.
It became a hobby for him, but, he knew he wanted to pursue it full time.
officially launched the business at the beginning of this year, he said. is all new now, the business side of things.
He chose to make woodworking a full time career because it was what made him happy.
figured you could live an entire life miserable and still not end up where you want to be, doing what you don want. So, you might as well try to do what you want to do, said Coles.
Originally from Prince Edward Island, the influence is shown in the name of his company.
silver fox is part of their coat of arms, and I like it because of a litter of red pups, it is very rare, but there still that oddball one silver one that shows up. I like to think my work stands out like that, he explained.
All of his pieces and designs are handcrafted, which he noted gives it a special feel.
