FARGO When it started up in the late 1960s, the St. Francis Thrift Store in Fargo was the only place in town for families struggling to get by.
45 years later, the store not only provides clothes, appliances and furniture, it takes all the profits and uses the money to help pay bills for those on the edge.
Every morning is like one giant coffee party in the sorting room.
Willy Kautzman is the lone man among an army of volunteer women.
“The women give me heck, there is no end to it,” Kautzman said.
Roberta Wahl and the rest of the volunteers are at St. Francis for hours every week.
“36 to 42 hours a week,” Kautzman said.
It’s like a job without the pay, but the reward comes in seeing who gets help.
“The kids need clothes, adults need things. They are just down and out,” Wahl said.
Profits made here go to help people like Kayla Comeaux, a working single mother of three who just went through a fire and now, a notice to shut off her power. The thrift store came through with $300.
